Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is formed by 5α-reductase from testosterone. DHT has 3–5× higher AR binding affinity than testosterone and is the primary intracellular androgen in 5α-reductase-expressing tissues (prostate, skin, hair follicles). DHT cannot be aromatized to estrogen.
